6 Ways to Beat End-of-School-Year Burnout (Without Losing Your Mind)

By Tien J - Macaroni KID Palo Alto May 9, 2025

If you're staring down the calendar wondering how you’ll make it to summer break, I'm right there with you. From Palo Alto to San Carlos and everywhere in between, Bay Area parents are powering through the final weeks of school with a mix of caffeine, carpool chaos, and sheer willpower.

But summer’s in sight — and with a few practical tips, we can survive the homestretch with your sanity intact. Here’s how:

1. Lower the Bar (Seriously)

Now’s not the time for perfection. If dinner is whatever you picked up at the Redwood City Kiwanis Farmers Market, that’s a win. Pajamas on at 5 PM? Also a win. Let the little things slide.

2. Create a Countdown

A simple countdown helps everyone stay motivated. Celebrate each crossed-off day with something fun — like planning your first summer splash at Mitchell Park Splash Pad, or a nature break with a hike at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve in Redwood City.

3. Say No (Guilt-Free)

You don’t need to attend every theme day, potluck, or class party. Pick a few that bring your family joy — and skip the rest. Check your child’s school site for events you actually care about, and skip the burnout. Need a break instead? Try a low-key outing like storytime at the Menlo Park Library or a stroll through Filoli in Woodside.

4. Tag Team the Madness

Team up with neighbors or friends in San Carlos, Atherton, or Los Altos. Share school pickups, lunch-making duties, or even last-minute teacher gifts from Kepler's Books in Menlo Park. It takes a village — use yours.

5. Reward Yourself

Make space for joy in small doses. Grab a quiet latte at Palo Alto Cafe in Palo Alto, take a solo walk at Bedwell Bayfront Park in Menlo Park, or pick up a beach read at the Portola Valley Library. You deserve it.

6. Let the Little Things Go

That lost permission slip? The forgotten library book? It’s okay. You’re not the only one who’s a bit checked out right now. Breathe. Laugh at yourself. Embrace the chaos. Summer is coming.

You’re Almost There…
